Benefits of Making Changes
Imagine the feeling of watching a vicious storm swallow your precious belongings and tear apart your home. People are left defenseless after powerful tornadoes hit their city. So what is everyone else to do? Watch the news, feel bad for those affected, and then move on? What about taking action and helping those who can’t help themselves?
When I was eight years old a tornado hit in Ohio. My ninth birthday was coming up, and I organized a plan. Instead of getting presents for my birthday, I requested my friends and family to buy clothing, toys, and food for those affected by the tornado. At my birthday party we gathered up the items and donated them to the Red Cross.
My parents thought I’d feel disappointed about not getting any gifts, but it was the exact opposite. I was proud of myself for making the decision to help others, and I felt glad that the items I donated would have an effect on families going through hardships. It filled me with pride to know that I had done something most kids my age wouldn’t have done. I felt mature for being selfless and considerate.
When my mom and I were setting up for my birthday party, I was super eager to see what people would bring in. I was so excited about all the items my family and friends were able to gather. I had a blast that day, not just because it was my birthday, but because I knew that I was contributing to my community.
Helping others invokes a feelings of responsibility and joy. It feels satisfying to know your actions can help make a change in the world, even if it is a minor change. People in society depend on each other when they are in need. You can help keep our society operate properly by being charitable, generous, and kindhearted. There is no greater feeling than the feeling of knowing you’ve helped change someone’s life.
